Swedish is one of the Germanic languages of Europe, which means the language is related to English and German. As English is the first foreign language taught in Sweden, most Swedish people both speak and understand English. However, as an international student you are encouraged to learn at least some Swedish to further enjoy your stay in Växjö. Learning a new language is always a rewarding experience.

Växjö University offers a a range of Swedish as a Foreign Language courses for exchange students, from beginners’ to native-speakers’ level. If you want to learn some Swedish parallell with your regular studies but do not necessarily want to earn credit, all exchange students have the opportunity to sign up for a non-credit introductory Swedish course.
