ESB114 - Modern Spanish Fiction / Literatura hispánica moderna

Undergraduate level

Language of instruction: Spanish

The aim of this course is to:

  • train the student in using theoreti­cal literary methods applied to a corpus of Spanish and/or Spanish American ction
  • develop awareness and understand­ing of how the text of ction is related to the historical, social and cultural context in which it is produced

Prerequisites
Admission requires 20 credit points (30 ECTS) in Spanish

Contents
Reading and analysis of Spanish and/or Spanish American ction. The course is thematic and can vary from one year to another.

Teaching methods
After the introduction at Växjö Univer­sity, the students will mainly interact through the Internet.

Assessment methods
Active participation in interaction through the Internet. Several written presentations will be required during the course.

ESC111 - Spanish-speaking Women Writers / Escritoras hispánicas

The aim of this course is:

  • to raise critical questions from a general point of view and develop an awareness of existing differences between conditions for male and female creativity
  • to create an understanding particu­larly of Spanish and Spanish Ameri­can Women Writers’ ction

Prerequisites
Admission requires 40 credit points (60 ECTS) in Spanish.

Contents

  • an introduction to critical feminist theories
  • discussion and analysis of ction written by Spanish-speaking Women Writers taking into consideration the specic gender order in these countries

Teaching methods
The teaching consists of lectures, semi­nars and group work.

Assessment methods
Active participation at lectures and sem­inars. A written paper will be required at the end of   the course.

ESC113 - Today’s Spanish America / América Latina de hoy

October–December, 2006

The aim of this course is to:

  • give a more profound knowledge of Spanish American societies, literature and culture
  • raise critical questions about cultural, particularly indigenous, identity
  • understand the perception of the Other and the global inuence of a Eurocentric perception that has its roots in the European Modern Project

Prerequisites
Admission requires 40 credit points (60 ECTS) in Spanish.

Contents
A few Spanish American countries are analysed through themes like social injustice, gender order, human rights, culture and literature.

Teaching methods
After the introduction at Växjö Univer­sity, the students will mainly interact through the Internet.

Assessment methods
Active participation in interaction through the Internet. Several written presentations will be required during the course.

ESC191 - Cultural Encounters / Encuentros culturales

Language of instruction: Spanish

The aim of this course is to:

  • raise critical questions about the nature of cultural identity, cultural change and interaction,
  • address, from a comparative and critical perspective fundamental questions about cross-cultural interaction and the perception of the other,
  • develop an awareness and under­standing of cultural and intercul­tural interaction

Prerequisites
Admission requires 40 credit points (60 ECTS or equivalent) in Spanish or na­tive knowledge of Spanish.

Contents
The course combines a theoretical discussion with case studies. The course focuses primarily on the encounter between two cultures: the Hispanic and the Scandinavian. Readings will be drawn from literature and contemporary cultural studies, supplemented with lms.

Teaching methods
Instruction consists of lectures, seminars and group work.

Assessment methods
Active participation in seminars, pres­entations, oral and written, during the course.
